CSIRO vents over gas claims

THE CSIRO has asked Australia's oil and gas industry lobby group to withdraw an advertisement claiming the nation's peak scientific group had given coal-seam gas a clean bill of health.

The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association commercial says CSIRO and government studies have shown that CSG extraction is not a threat to groundwater.

But yesterday the CSIRO said it rejected the claim and had asked that the advertisement not be aired.

"At no time has CSIRO made such a statement, and nor do the results of CSIRO research support such a statement," it said. "CSIRO has stated on the public record that coal-seam gas extraction is likely to pose a 'low risk' to groundwater quality through contamination.
